The course is a study of the concepts related to structure, composition, and properties of matter and their energy relationships. Instruction focuses on the metric system, atomic theory, scientific notation, chemical formulas, chemical equations, the three phases of matter, chemical periodicity, chemical bonding, mole concept, stoichiometry, solutions, gas laws, and introduction to acids and bases. Students are expected to apply dimensional analysis and problem solving techniques in the completion of their individual and collaborative assignments/projects and laboratory experiments. The course includes a notable math component.

Prerequisites

A grade of A- or higher in 325 Biology I or a grade of C+ or higher in 330 Biology I (H) and a grade of A- or higher in 220 Algebra I or a grade of C+ or higher in 225 Algebra I (H).
