This course is designed as a three term course to provide additional support in concepts of English and Introduction to Literature. The course is a survey of the short story, novel, drama, nonfiction, and poetry. Literature study will focus on reading comprehension and an intense review of literary terminology, including characterization, plot, theme, and irony. Composition instruction, based on the process approach, provides structured and guided practice in writing for a variety of purposes, including a research paper. Development and reinforcement of fundamental communication and grammar skills are emphasized, along with intense reviews of parts of speech, parts of sentences, and types of sentences. Also included in the course are vocabulary development, library experience, and extensive work on study skills.
