Want to hear about the fall of Baldur? How about the Vikings in their heyday reigning terror across Europe?
Mr. Haffner’s social studies class is taking a deep dive into both subjects. He’s combining Norse mythology with Viking history and referencing several movies to keep it entertaining.
So, back to Baldur, who was the Norse god of light, joy, and purity. Baldur’s weakness was that he was susceptible to mistletoe. Another Norse god, Loki (reference Marvel movies), found out about this and used it to his advantage. He tricked Baldur’s blind brother, Hod, into throwing a dart laced with mistletoe and killed Baldur.
Mr. Haffner talked about the Vikings and why they were so feared throughout Europe. The Vikings were well known for performing raids all over Europe, attacking villages and monasteries, looting place to place, using their ships designed to maneuver into as shallow as 3 feet of water. Eventually, they learned how to farm, trade, and explore, going as far as Constantinople all the way to North America.
Pretty cool class!
